# Sinéad O'Connor

> She tore up the Pope's photograph on live television in 1992 - nearly a decade before the abuse scandals broke wide open - and the world never forgave her for being early. "Nothing Compares 2 U" made her a star; that single gesture made her a pariah.

## Bio

Sinéad O'Connor's debut, The Lion and the Cobra, arrived in 1987 and charted internationally, but it was I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got in 1990 that detonated: seven million copies sold, "Nothing Compares 2 U" named the top world single of the year. The Saturday Night Live protest in 1992 - ripping the Pope's photo on camera - ignited global fury and effectively ended her mainstream moment, though she kept recording: Am I Not Your Girl? and Universal Mother both went gold in the UK, Faith and Courage in Australia, Throw Down Your Arms in Ireland. She converted to Islam in 2018, took the name Shuhada' Sadaqat, and published a bestselling memoir, Rememberings, in 2021. She died on 26 July 2023.
