## Bio

Simeon Borisov Saxe-Coburg-Gotha was born 16 June 1937 and became Tsar Simeon II in 1943 while still a child, with power held by a regency council led by his uncle Kiril, General Nikola Mihov, and prime minister Bogdan Filov. The monarchy was abolished by referendum in 1946, sending him into exile. After communism fell, he returned to Bulgaria in 1996 and founded the National Movement for Stability and Progress. His party won the 2001 election, and as Simeon Sakskoburggotski he served as prime minister from 2001 to 2005, then led his party into coalition with the Bulgarian Socialist Party after finishing second in 2005. When his party failed to win seats in 2009, he retired from politics. He remains one of only two living men who were heads of state during World War II, along with the 14th Dalai Lama.
