# Sezen Aksu

> She sold over 40 million albums and shaped Turkish pop for half a century, but her real power might be in the songwriting - including "Şımarık", the Tarkan hit that became a continental earworm, and the careers she launched by handing songs to younger voices.

## Bio

Fatma Sezen Yıldırım was born on 13 July 1954 and took the stage as Sezen Aksu in 1975, earning nicknames like "Queen of Turkish Pop" and "Minik Serçe" - Little Sparrow. She built a catalogue that moved 40 million units worldwide, but the larger story is how she used that platform: mentoring and writing for a generation of Turkish singers including Sertab Erener, Şebnem Ferah, and Hande Yener. Her work with Tarkan produced "Şımarık" and "Şıkıdım", hits that crossed borders, and a collaboration with Goran Bregović pulled her sound into wider international circles. In 2010, NPR listed her among the "50 Great Voices" - a nod to nearly four decades of influence that never really stopped.
