The name derives from the Sanskrit words Śaṇ, and Dilam (Moon), thus meaning Full Moon, therefore implying Śhāṇḍilya had great devotion towards the Moon God. His descendants have a direct descent from the Chandravamsha and a matrilineal descent from the Suryavamsha.
