Salvador Guillermo Allende Gossens worked his way through nearly four decades of Chilean politics as a life-long Socialist Party member, holding positions as senator, deputy, and cabinet minister while losing presidential bids in 1952, 1958, and 1964. In 1970 he won as the Popular Unity coalition candidate in a close three-way race, taking office without a majority and chosen by Congress in a run-off. As president he pursued "The Chilean Path to Socialism" — nationalizing major industries, expanding education, improving working-class living standards — while navigating a fractured coalition between his own moderate faction, the radical Socialist wing, and Communists who favored gradual cooperation with Christian democrats. He clashed with the right-wing Congress and judiciary until 11 September 1973, when the military moved to overthrow him in a coup backed by the CIA and known in advance by Nixon and Kissinger. That day, surrounded at La Moneda Palace, Allende gave a final speech vowing not to resign, then died by suicide in his office — ending more than four decades of uninterrupted democracy and opening the door to Pinochet's dictatorship, under which at leas
