## Bio

Rastko Nemanjić was born the youngest son of Grand Prince Stefan Nemanja, founder of the Nemanjić dynasty, and briefly ruled the appanage of Zachlumia from 1190 to 1192 before abandoning the prospect of rule for monastic life. Taking the name Sava at Mount Athos, he established the Hilandar monastery, which became a pivotal cultural and religious center for Serbs. In 1219 the Patriarchate in Nicea recognized him as the first Serbian Archbishop, and that same year he authored the Zakonopravilo nomocanon — Serbia's oldest known constitution — securing full religious and political independence for his people. He also wrote the first Serbian biography, a life of his father Stefan Nemanja, and is regarded as the greatest figure of Serbian medieval literature. When the Ottomans burned his remains in 1594 to crush an uprising in which Serbs had marched under icons of his face, they built what would become the Church of Saint Sava on that site — one of the largest church buildings in the world.
