## Bio

Rudolf Höss was born 25 November 1901 in Germany. He became commandant of Auschwitz on 4 May 1940 and held the post until November 1943, then again from 8 May 1944 to 18 January 1945 — the longest tenure of any commandant there. During that span he tested and implemented methods to accelerate the Final Solution, Hitler's order to exterminate Europe's Jews. On the initiative of subordinate Karl Fritzsch, Höss adopted the pesticide Zyklon B for use in the camp's gas chambers. After Nazi Germany's defeat he lived under a false name until the British found him and handed him to Poland. He was convicted of war crimes and hanged 16 April 1947. While imprisoned, Polish authorities asked him to write his memoirs, later published in English as Commandant of Auschwitz: The Autobiography of Rudolf Hoess.
