Rosalía Vila Tobella fell for Spanish folk music at 14 and studied musicology at the Catalonia College of Music, graduating with honours in 2017 via her debut album Los Ángeles. Her second album, El mal querer (2018), reimagined flamenco with pop and hip-hop, spawning "Malamente" and "Pienso en tu mirá" — both met with critical acclaim and a Latin Grammy for Album of the Year. She pivoted to urbano with 2019's "Con altura" and "Yo x ti, tú x mí", then gave reggaeton an experimental edge on Motomami (2022), which became the year's best-reviewed album on Metacritic. Her fourth album Lux (2025) fused art pop and classical elements, breaking several all-time records for a Spanish-speaking female artist. She holds thirteen number-ones in Spain — the most for any local woman — and two Grammys, eleven Latin Grammys, and a stack of international awards. Billboard named her 2019's Rising Star for "changing the sound of today's mainstream music," and she became the first Spanish-singing act nominated for Best New Artist at the Grammys.
