## Bio

Born 9 August 1939, Romano Prodi built a career as an economics professor and Goldman Sachs advisor before entering politics as the architect of Italy's centre-left. He led The Olive Tree coalition to victory in 1996, becoming prime minister until a confidence vote felled him in 1998. Appointed President of the European Commission in 1999, he served until 2004, then returned to Italian politics. His Union coalition defeated Silvio Berlusconi's House of Freedoms in 2006, putting him back in office - until the Senate withdrew confidence in January 2008, ending his second term. He founded the Democratic Party in 2007 and later chaired a UN peacekeeping panel; since 2021 he's served as Special Envoy for the Sahel.
