## Bio

Jean-Baptiste Nicolas Robert Schuman was born in Luxembourg on 29 June 1886 and became a French statesman and Christian democratic thinker. He served twice as Prime Minister of France, and held posts as Minister of Finance and Foreign Minister in the postwar years. In those roles he helped build the architecture that would bind Europe and the Atlantic: he was instrumental in founding the European Communities, the Council of Europe, and NATO. The Schuman Declaration he proposed established the European Coal and Steel Community, the direct predecessor of the EU. The College of Europe named its 1964–1965 academic year after him. He died on 4 September 1963. In 2021, Pope Francis declared him venerable for having acted on Christian principles.
