## Bio

Robert Edwards was a British physiologist who spent years working on the problem of human conception outside the body, a pursuit many considered unethical or impossible. With obstetrician Patrick Steptoe and embryologist Jean Purdy, he refined the process that resulted in Louise Brown's birth on 25 July 1978 — the first baby conceived through IVF. They built the first IVF programme for infertile patients and trained others in the method. Edwards went on to found the journal Human Reproduction in 1986. In 2010, thirty-two years after that first birth, he received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
