## Bio

Born Endre Ernő Friedmann in Hungary in 1913, he fled political repression as a teenager and moved to Berlin, then watched Hitler's rise push him to Paris. There he met Gerda Taro and they began publishing their work, inventing the name that would carry him through five wars: the Spanish Civil War, the Second Sino-Japanese War, World War II across Europe, the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, and the First Indochina War. He shot the liberation of Paris, the wreckage of London and North Africa and Italy, and counted Hemingway, Steinbeck, and Huston as friends. In 1947 Eisenhower gave him the Medal of Freedom; that same year he co-founded Magnum Photos in Paris, the first cooperative agency for freelance photographers worldwide. He stepped on a landmine in Vietnam in 1954, forty years old.
