## Bio

Trained as a lawyer, Poincaré entered the Chamber of Deputies in 1887 and climbed through cabinet posts until co-founding the Democratic Republican Alliance in 1902, the dominant centre-right party of the Third Republic. He became prime minister in 1912 and president the following year, a role he used more actively than custom allowed: he traveled to Russia twice to shore up the alliance frayed by the Bosnian and Agadir crises, and played a significant part in the July Crisis that pulled France into war. After 1917 his rival Clemenceau held the premiership and Poincaré's sway dimmed, though at the Paris Peace Conference he pushed for occupying the Rhineland. He returned as prime minister in 1922 and the next year ordered French forces into the Ruhr to collect reparations by force, a move that hardened his image abroad as punitive and bellicose. Defeated in 1924, he served a final term from 1926 to 1929, and died in 1934 still honored in France as "Le Lion," the victorious wartime leader.
