## Bio

Born in 1931, Raúl Castro fought alongside Fidel in the revolution and became minister of the Armed Forces in 1959, a post he held for 49 years — the longest such tenure on record. He joined the Politburo in 1965 and spent decades as the regime's military enforcer. When Fidel's health collapsed in July 2006, Raúl became acting president, then took the office officially in February 2008. Re-elected in 2013, he announced that term would be his last. He stepped down from the presidency in April 2018, handing power to Miguel Díaz-Canel, but stayed on as first secretary of the Communist Party until April 2021. He still holds a National Assembly seat for Santiago de Cuba.
