## Bio

Ramesses VI Nebmaatre-Meryamun was a son of Ramesses III who spent his youth as a prince-scribe and cavalry officer before taking the throne after his nephew Ramesses V died. In his first two years he put down Libyan raids in Upper Egypt, then buried his predecessor in an unmarked grave and commandeered the dead man's tomb in the Valley of the Kings — KV9 — expanding and redecorating it for himself. The workers' huts at its entrance accidentally hid Tutankhamun's tomb from the looters who would soon ransack the valley. Egypt lost its last Canaanite footholds during his reign; prices spiked, construction money dried up, so he carved his name over older kings' monuments while boasting he'd covered the land with works honoring the gods. Meanwhile the high priest Ramessesnakht turned Thebes into a second capital to rival the pharaoh's seat in the Delta, a shift the crown seems to have allowed. Ramesses VI died in his forties after eight years of rule; his mummy was violated within two decades, moved to a cache tomb, and found by Victor Loret in 1898.
