## Bio

Rajneesh said he experienced spiritual awakening in 1953 at 21. After years teaching philosophy, he resigned from the University of Jabalpur in 1966 and began touring India, critiquing religious orthodoxy, political ideology, and Gandhi himself. In 1970 he settled in Mumbai to initiate "neo-sannyasins," then moved to Pune in 1974 where an ashram fused Eastern mysticism with Human Potential Movement therapies for Westerners. Tension with the Janata Party government and a $5 million tax claim pushed the movement to Oregon in 1981, where Rajneeshpuram faced legal battles with county residents and the state. In 1985 Rajneesh asked authorities to investigate his secretary Ma Anand Sheela for crimes including a mass food-poisoning attack to sway elections, an assassination plot, attempted murder of his physician, and bugging his quarters; Sheela and others were convicted. Deported on immigration charges after an Alford plea, denied entry by 21 countries, he returned to Pune in 1987 and died there in 1990.
