## Bio

Charlotte Augusta was the only child of George, Prince of Wales, and Caroline of Brunswick, born into an arranged marriage so toxic her parents separated before she could walk. Raised mostly by servants, she saw her mother rarely; her father controlled access and her mother eventually left England. As she came of age, her father pushed her toward William, Hereditary Prince of Orange. She accepted, then broke it off, and an extended battle of wills followed until he relented and let her marry Leopold of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. After a year and a half of happiness, she went into labor on 6 November 1817 and died delivering a stillborn son. She had been George III's only legitimate grandchild, and her death set off both mass mourning and a succession crisis — the aging sons of the King rushed to marry, and it was Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, who fathered the girl who became Victoria.
