## Bio

Born deaf at Windsor Castle in 1885, a great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria, Alice married Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark in 1903 and spent decades pinballing between exile and restoration as Greek politics convulsed. In 1930 she was diagnosed with schizophrenia and committed to a Swiss sanatorium; she never lived with her husband again. After her recovery she returned to Athens and devoted herself to charity work, staying through the German occupation to shelter Jewish refugees — Israel later named her Righteous Among the Nations. She founded the Christian Sisterhood of Martha and Mary, a Greek Orthodox nursing order, and remained in Greece until the 1967 military coup, when her son invited her to London. She died at Buckingham Palace in 1969, and in 1988 her remains were moved to Jerusalem, buried at the convent on the Mount of Olives.
