Edward Antony Richard Louis was born at Buckingham Palace on 10 March 1964, third in line to the throne, the last child of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. After Gordonstoun and a teaching stint in New Zealand, he read history at Jesus College, Cambridge, graduating in 1986. A brief go at the Royal Marines ended early; he turned instead to theatre, working at Andrew Lloyd Webber's Really Useful Theatre Company, then television, eventually founding his own production firm, Ardent Productions. In 2002 he stepped down from the company and began full-time royal duties, taking on over 70 patronages focused on the arts, sport, and the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. He married Sophie Rhys-Jones in 1999, becoming Earl of Wessex, and they have two children, Louise and James. On his 59th birthday in 2023, his brother Charles III gave him their father's old title: Duke of Edinburgh.
