## Bio

Born in 1882, seventh child of King George I of Greece and a grandson of Denmark's Christian IX, Andrew trained for the army early and saw real combat in the Balkan Wars. When his father was assassinated in 1913 and his brother Constantine took the throne, Constantine's World War I neutrality triggered abdication and exile for the family. They returned, and Andrew commanded as a Major General in the Greco-Turkish War of 1919–1922, but Greece lost badly. Andrew took part of the blame and was exiled again in 1922, settling in France. By 1930 he'd grown estranged from his wife, Princess Alice of Battenberg. Their only son Philip joined the British navy; all four daughters married Germans, three with Nazi ties. The war split them across Europe. Andrew died in Monte Carlo in December 1944, having last seen his wife and son in 1939.
