## Bio

Born Gian Pietro Carafa in 1476, he served as papal nuncio in Spain, where he developed a lasting distrust of Spanish power. He resigned as bishop of Chieti in 1524 to co-found the Theatines with Saint Cajetan, then returned to Rome as Archbishop of Naples to reorganize the Inquisition against the spread of Protestantism. Elected pope in 1555 through Cardinal Alessandro Farnese's influence and against the wishes of Charles V, his four-year papacy was marked by fierce nationalism and resistance to Habsburg dominance. He issued Cum nimis absurdum, confining Rome's Jews to what became the Roman Ghetto, and introduced the first modern Index of Prohibited Books. The appointment of his nephew Carlo Carafa as cardinal ended in scandal and dismissal. He died in August 1559, so reviled that his family rushed the burial to ward off a popular uprising.
