Alessandro Farnese became Pope Paul III in October 1534, stepping into a Church still reeling from the 1527 sack of Rome and watching the Protestant Reformation spread. He recognized the Jesuits, the Barnabites, and the Congregation of the Oratory as the new guard of Catholic reform, and in 1545 convened the Council of Trent — the pivot that would define the Church's response for centuries. But he ran a parallel operation: funneling power and fortune to his family, including his illegitimate son Pier Luigi Farnese, in a display of nepotism that tangled with his reformist agenda. He also kept Michelangelo on the payroll and received the dedication of Copernicus's heliocentric treatise. He died in November 1549, having launched the Catholic Reformation and secured the Farnese name in equal measure.
