Ugo Boncompagni was born 7 January 1502 and rose through the Church to become Pope Gregory XIII on 13 May 1572, taking the helm of both the Catholic Church and the Papal States. His papacy's defining act was commissioning the calendar reform that bears his name — the Gregorian calendar, which corrected the drift in the old Julian system and remains the international civil standard centuries later.
