## Bio

Pedro Sánchez Pérez-Castejón was born 29 February 1972 and entered politics as a Madrid city councillor in 2004, reaching Congress in 2009. He became Secretary-General of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party in 2014, led them through two inconclusive elections in 2015 and 2016, then resigned after internal clashes - only to win the leadership back eight months later by defeating Susana Díaz and Patxi López. On 1 June 2018 he called a no-confidence vote against Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, stitched together support from Unidas Podemos and regional parties, and was appointed prime minister the next day by King Felipe VI. The PSOE gained 38 seats in April 2019, their first national win since 2008, but short of a majority; after another election that November he formed Spain's first coalition government since the return to democracy, partnering with Unidas Podemos. In 2023, after regional losses, he called a snap election, held every PSOE seat, finished second behind the People's Party, and on 17 November began a third term as prime minister.
