## Bio

Born in Rionegro in 1949 and raised in Medellín, Escobar left university without graduating and moved through petty crime — fake lottery tickets, car theft, kidnapping for ransom. In 1976 he founded the Medellín Cartel, establishing smuggling routes from Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador into the US; by the 1980s his operation was moving 70 to 80 tons of cocaine a month. The wealth bought him a seat in Colombia's Chamber of Representatives in 1982, where he funded houses and football pitches for the poor, but his political rise collapsed under pressure from Colombian and US authorities. Retaliation came in bombings; arrests loomed. In 1991 he surrendered under a no-extradition deal and lived in La Catedral, a prison he built for himself, until he escaped in 1992 when the government tried to move him. The cartel crumbled during the manhunt. On 2 December 1993, a day after his 44th birthday, Colombian police shot him dead in his hometown. Over 25,000 people attended his funeral.
