## Bio

Osamu Tezuka watched Princess Iron Fan as a boy and decided to remake what pictures could do on a page. In 1947 he published New Treasure Island and set off what became known as the manga revolution in Japan. Over four decades he created Astro Boy, Princess Knight, Kimba the White Lion, then turned toward darker, denser terrain with Black Jack, Phoenix, and Buddha — each winning awards, each redefining what the medium could carry. He died of stomach cancer in February 1989 with the final chapters of Phoenix still unfinished and several animations mid-production. A museum in Takarazuka now holds the arc of his life; the work itself holds half the visual DNA of modern manga.
