## Bio

Born around 1186, Ögedei was Genghis Khan's third son and fought through his father's campaigns, earning his reputation when he resolved a command dispute between his older brothers by taking sole charge and capturing Gurganj in 1221. After Genghis died in 1227, Ögedei was elected khan in 1229 following a two-year regency. He launched invasions that conquered the Jin dynasty by 1234, pushed into Korea and Persia, and sent armies under Batu Khan and Subutai deep into Europe — defeating Poland at Legnica and Hungary at Mohi in 1241 before pulling back, likely to settle succession after his death that same year. He built Karakorum as the empire's capital, developed tax systems and trade networks with advisors like Yelü Chucai, and expanded his father's domain into the largest land empire in history. His son Güyük succeeded him.
