O Yeong-su was born O Se-kang on October 19, 1944, and began acting on stage in 1963. Over the next half-century he appeared in more than 200 plays, often cast as monks after working extensively in Buddhist theater. His screen work followed, quiet and steady. Then in 2021 he was cast as Oh Il-nam in the first season of Netflix's Squid Game—the elderly player with the marbles and the secret. The role brought him worldwide recognition at an age when most careers have closed. He won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Miniseries or Television Film and earned a Primetime Emmy nomination, the first Korean actor to reach both marks.
