## Bio

Born in Kocho, Iraq, Nadia Murad was twenty-one when Islamic State fighters swept through her Yazidi community in 2014. Most of her family was killed in the massacre. She was abducted and held for three months alongside thousands of other Yazidi women and girls. After escaping, she moved to Germany and began speaking publicly about what had happened. In 2016 the United Nations appointed her its first Goodwill Ambassador for the Dignity of Survivors of Human Trafficking. She founded Nadia's Initiative to help survivors of genocide and trafficking rebuild. In 2018 she and Congolese gynecologist Denis Mukwege were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. She remains the first Iraqi and the first Yazidi to receive the prize.
