## Bio

Moïse Tshombe was born into a Lunda aristocratic family on 10 November 1919 and built a business career in Katanga Province before cofounding the pro-Western CONAKAT party in 1958. When Congo gained independence in June 1960, he became president of autonomous Katanga and immediately clashed with leftist prime minister Patrice Lumumba, declaring Katanga's independence and triggering the Congo Crisis. After Lumumba was overthrown and executed by Tshombe's supporters in 1961, the Katanga rebellion was crushed in 1963, forcing him into exile. He returned the next year as prime minister to fight the Simba rebellion, founded the CONACO alliance that won the 1965 elections, then was dismissed in October and charged with treason after the November coup. He died in disputed circumstances on 29 June 1969.
