## Bio

Milena Jesenská was born 10 August 1896 in what is now the Czech Republic. She worked as a journalist, writer, and editor, and became one of the first translators to bring Franz Kafka's work from German into Czech. Their correspondence - initiated through the translation work - has since become a document in its own right, read alongside his fiction. After the Nazi invasion of Czechoslovakia, she joined a resistance movement, helping Jews and other refugees escape. She was caught and sent to Ravensbrück concentration camp, where she died on 17 May 1944.
