Born in the 11th century, Milarepa turned to dark magic as a young man and killed. The weight of that act drove him to seek out Marpa Lotsawa, a teacher who put him through brutal trials before granting instruction. He emerged as a siddha — a master of yogic powers — and spent years in mountain caves, composing spiritual poetry that would carry across centuries. His teachings became central to the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. He also climbed Mount Kailash, a peak held sacred across traditions. He died sometime between 1111 and 1123, leaving behind a body of work that several Tibetan Buddhist schools still study.
