## Bio

Born 20 April 1960, Díaz-Canel is a Cuban politician and engineer who joined the Politburo in 2003 and climbed steadily: Minister of Higher Education from 2009 to 2012, then Vice President of the Council of Ministers, then First Vice President of the Council of State in 2013. In 2018 he succeeded Raúl Castro as President of the Council of State, and when Cuba enacted a new constitution in 2019 he became the 17th president of Cuba — the first head of state since 1976 from outside the Castro family. On 19 April 2021, after Raúl Castro stepped down, Díaz-Canel was appointed First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba, cementing his position as the island's top leader. The transition marked the end of more than six decades of Castro rule.
