## Bio

Michel Temer was born 23 September 1940, trained as a lawyer, and built a career that included poetry and writing alongside politics. He served as Brazil's 24th vice president starting in 2011, then became acting president on 12 May 2016 when Dilma Rousseff's powers were suspended for an impeachment trial. On 31 August 2016 the Senate voted 61–20 to remove Rousseff, and Temer took over the remainder of her term as the 37th president. In his first speech he called for "national salvation" and pushed to overhaul pensions, labor laws, and public spending. By 2017 a poll showed 7% approval and 76% wanting him gone; protests followed, but he refused to step down. He did not run in 2018 and handed power to Jair Bolsonaro on 1 January 2019.
