Michael Andrew Fox, born June 9, 1961, started acting as a child in the 1970s before landing Alex P. Keaton on Family Ties in 1982 and Marty McFly in the Back to the Future trilogy starting in 1985. The films made him a global name, and he rode that momentum through Teen Wolf, The Secret of My Success, and a string of leading roles into the '90s, including a return to television on Spin City in 1996. In 1998 he disclosed a 1991 Parkinson's disease diagnosis that would have quietly ended most careers, but instead he founded The Michael J. Fox Foundation in 2000 and kept working — voice roles in Stuart Little and Atlantis, guest spots on The Good Wife and Curb Your Enthusiasm, even a short-lived sitcom bearing his own name in 2013. He officially retired in 2020 as symptoms worsened, though he has appeared on screen since. Five Emmys, four Golden Globes, and in 2022 the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for the second act no one saw coming.
