## Bio

Born in Amorium around 770, Michael rose through the military ranks alongside Leo V the Armenian, helping him overthrow Emperor Michael I Rhangabe in 813. The alliance soured: Leo sentenced Michael to death, but Michael turned conspirator and had Leo killed at Christmas 820, seizing the throne himself. Almost immediately Thomas the Slav launched a revolt so dangerous it nearly ended Michael's rule, dragging on until spring 824. The breathing room didn't last—his reign's final years saw two catastrophic losses that would haunt Byzantium for generations: Muslims began their conquest of Sicily, and Andalusian pirates took Crete. At home, he backed the resumed policy of iconoclasm that Leo had revived. He died on 2 October 829, first of the Amorian dynasty.
