## Bio

Michael I Rangabe was a courtier under Nikephoros I who survived the catastrophic 811 campaign against the Bulgars that killed the emperor and crippled his son Staurakios. Proclaimed emperor by Patriarch Nicephorus on 2 October 811, Michael leaned heavily on iconodule clerics and pursued conciliation: he recognised Charlemagne as emperor (though not of the Romans) and sought papal help in the Moechian controversy. His tentative command in a second war against the Bulgars ended in defeat at Versinikia. Leo the Armenian, stratēgos of the Anatolic Theme, abandoned him mid-battle and was proclaimed emperor by the military in 813 — the last time Byzantine soldiers would overthrow a ruler by force. Michael abdicated under pressure and withdrew to a monastery. His sons were castrated to close his line.
