Gambon started at the Royal National Theatre as one of Laurence Olivier's original picks, cutting his teeth on Shakespeare — Othello, Hamlet, Macbeth, Coriolanus — and racking up thirteen Olivier nominations, winning three times between 1985 and 1990. His film debut came in 1965's Othello, and over the next decades he moved through The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover, The Insider, Gosford Park, The King's Speech, and two Wes Anderson pictures. Television brought him four BAFTAs — for The Singing Detective, Wives and Daughters, Longitude, and Perfect Strangers — making him one of only two actors to win three consecutive times. In 2004, he replaced Richard Harris as Albus Dumbledore and carried the role through seven Harry Potter films, the part that made him a fixture in millions of living rooms. He was knighted in 1998, earned a Tony nomination on Broadway in 1997, and in 2017 Ireland gave him a lifetime achievement award. He died in September 2023.
