## Bio

Born in Washington, D.C. on April 2, 1939, Marvin Gaye came up through Harvey Fuqua's Moonglows before signing to Motown's Tamla subsidiary at the start of the 1960s. He built stardom on a run of singles — "How Sweet It Is (to Be Loved by You)", "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" — and duets with Diana Ross and Tammi Terrell that included "Ain't No Mountain High Enough". In 1971, What's Going On broke him free from Motown's production grip and opened the door to Let's Get It On, I Want You, and Here, My Dear. After years as a tax exile in Europe, he moved to Columbia in 1982 and returned with "Sexual Healing" and Midnight Love, his biggest commercial success, earning two Grammys and an American Music Award. On April 1, 1984, one day before his 45th birthday, his father shot and killed him at the family house in Los Angeles; Marvin Gay Sr. pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter and received a suspended sentence.
