## Bio

Mark Rutte was born 14 February 1967 and started in business management at Unilever before entering national politics in 2002 as part of Jan Peter Balkenende's cabinet. He won the VVD leadership in 2006 and led the party to victory in the 2010 general election, becoming the first self-described liberal prime minister in the Netherlands in 92 years. His first government collapsed in April 2012 over budget negotiations, but the VVD won again and his second cabinet with the Labour Party became the first to complete a full four-year term since 1998. The VVD lost seats in 2017 but remained the largest party, and after a record formation period Rutte began his third term. His cabinet resigned over the Dutch childcare benefits scandal, yet the VVD won the 2021 election and Rutte formed a fourth government in 2022 after another record formation. On 7 July 2023 he announced his government's resignation after the cabinet couldn't agree on migration policy, continuing in a caretaker role until July 2024. In October 2024 he became the 14th Secretary General of NATO.
