His play Children of a Lesser God received both the Tony Award and the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Play. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and the Writers Guild of America Award in the same category for the 1985 film adaptation of the same name. He also received an Obie Award for his play When You Comin' Back, Red Ryder? Medoff's feature film Refuge was released in 2010.
