Born around 858, Mansur al-Hallaj became a preacher, poet, and teacher of Sufism, drawing crowds with his mystical teachings. His declaration "Ana'l-Haqq" — "I am the Truth" — split interpretation: some heard the annihilation of ego that lets the divine speak through a hollow vessel, others heard blasphemy. The saying entangled him in Abbasid court power struggles, and after a long confinement he was executed on 26 March 922 on charges both religious and political. Most fellow Sufis of his era disapproved. Centuries later, the tradition claimed him as a major figure.
