## Bio

Majorian rose as a commander in a collapsing empire, deposing Avitus in 457 with his ally Ricimer at the Battle of Placentia. He inherited little more than Italy and Dalmatia, but spent three years in relentless campaigning: he defeated a Vandal attack, intercepted and beat the Visigoths at the Battle of Arelate, reduced them to federate status, and returned Hispania to the empire. He reconquered Lugdunum from the Burgundians, reintegrated the Gallo-Romans under his commander Aegidius, and sent Nepotianus to reconquer Scalabis from the Suebi. In 460 he readied a fleet in Hispania to invade Africa, but the Vandals bribed traitors and destroyed it at the Battle of Cartagena. His reforms to curb corruption and rebuild institutions made enemies in the Roman Senate; Ricimer exploited the hostility and beheaded him at Dertona on 7 August 461. Every emperor after him until 476 was a puppet.
