## Bio

Born Salvatore Lucania in Italy on November 24, 1897, he came up through New York's Five Points Gang and survived the Castellammarese War by killing his way to a new idea: abolish the single boss of bosses, create a board. He became the first official head of what's now the Genovese family. In 1936 District Attorney Thomas E. Dewey convicted him on compulsory prostitution charges — thirty to fifty years. During World War II the U.S. Navy cut a deal through his associate Meyer Lansky: naval intelligence in exchange for a commuted sentence. In 1946 they let him out on the condition he leave forever. He was deported to Italy, where he died on January 26, 1962; they allowed the body to come home for burial.
