## Bio

Born Prince Louis of Battenberg in 1900, he served in the Royal Navy through both world wars and by 1943 was Supreme Allied Commander in South East Asia. In 1947 he became the last Viceroy of British India, tasked with handing power back; he oversaw partition into India and Pakistan, a process that triggered mass displacement and sectarian violence. After independence he stayed on briefly as India's first Governor-General, then returned to the armed forces, rising to First Sea Lord and Chief of the Defence Staff until 1965 — the longest tenure in that role. He mentored the young Prince Charles and moved through NATO and royal circles, though critics questioned his vanity and the flawed calls he made in India and wartime Asia. On 27 August 1979, the Provisional IRA detonated a bomb on his fishing boat off the Irish coast, killing him and three others.
