# Li Keqiang

> He ran China's economy for a decade as premier, championing domestic consumption over exports and steering the Made in China 2025 push - but his tenure became a study in power sidelined, as the office itself was hollowed out under Xi Jinping's centralizing grip.

## Bio

Li Keqiang was born in Hefei in 1955 and climbed through the Communist Youth League, leading it from 1993 to 1998 before governing Henan and then Liaoning. He served as first-ranked vice premier for the economy from 2008 to 2013, and though once seen as a candidate for paramount leader, he became premier in 2013 instead. He pushed China toward domestic consumption, launched the Shanghai Free-Trade Zone that year, and oversaw the Made in China 2025 initiative in 2015, also managing the COVID-19 response. A technocrat tied to Hu Jintao's Tuanpai faction, he was regarded as reform-minded and pragmatic - but both he and the premiership lost ground as Xi Jinping centralized authority, breaking the party-government balance of earlier years. He stepped down in 2022 and 2023, then died of a heart attack in October 2023, months after leaving office.
