## Bio

Born in Isauria, Leontius rose to patrikios and strategos of the Anatolic Theme under Constantine IV, winning battles against the Umayyads and forcing their caliph to negotiate peace. In 692 Justinian II sent him to campaign again, but this time he was crushed at Sebastopolis and thrown in prison for the failure. Released in 695 and appointed strategos of Hellas, he immediately turned on Justinian, led a rebellion, and took the throne. He ruled until 698, when Apsimarus — a droungarios from Leontius' own failed Carthage expedition — overthrew him, took the name Tiberius III, and had Leontius' nose and tongue severed. He spent years in the Monastery of Dalmatou until Justinian reclaimed power and executed both usurpers sometime between August 705 and February 706.
