Black co-founded Apollo Global Management in 1990 with Marc Rowan and Josh Harris, growing it into one of the industry's major players. Between 2012 and 2017, he paid Jeffrey Epstein $170 million for what he described as tax and financial services - work that reportedly saved him over $1 billion. Epstein also negotiated a 2015 settlement on Black's behalf: after a long-term affair with a Russian model who threatened to go public with sexual abuse allegations unless paid $100 million, Black agreed to $100,000 monthly payments over 15 years. When the Epstein payments became public, Black resigned from Apollo and stepped down as chairman of the Museum of Modern Art in 2021, saying he "deeply regrets" the relationship.
