Lazar Hrebeljanović rose around 1371 to rule Moravian Serbia, a realm spanning the Great Morava river basins and the largest polity to emerge after the Serbian Empire collapsed. He claimed direct succession from the extinct Nemanjić dynasty and sought to reunite the old empire under his leadership, backed by the Serbian Orthodox Church but never fully recognized by the nobility — he held the title of prince, not tsar, despite later legend. In June 1389 he led a Christian army against Sultan Murad I's invading Ottomans at the Battle of Kosovo; both sides took devastating losses, both leaders died, and neither won decisively. His widow Milica, ruling as regent for their teenage son Stefan Lazarević, accepted Ottoman suzerainty the following summer to fend off Hungarian pressure from the north. The church canonized Lazar as a martyr, and Serbian epic poetry elevated him to tsar, cementing his place at the center of national memory.
