## Bio

Born 1536 or 1537, Jane Grey was Henry VII's great-granddaughter and grew up with a humanist education that made her one of the most learned young women in England. In May 1553 she married Lord Guildford Dudley, whose father was Edward VI's chief minister. The dying Edward wrote a will that June naming Jane and her male heirs as successors, removing his half-sisters Mary and Elizabeth on grounds of illegitimacy — part Protestant conviction, part dynastic engineering. After Edward's death on 10 July 1553, Jane was proclaimed queen and held in the Tower awaiting coronation. Support collapsed within days. The privy council switched allegiance and declared Mary queen on 19 July. Jane's father-in-law was executed for treason within a month. Mary spared Jane at first, but when Jane's father joined Wyatt's rebellion against Mary's plan to marry Philip of Spain, both Jane and her husband were sentenced to death. They were beheaded at the Tower on 12 February 1554.
